FITCH FAMILY HISTORY
inque brevi spatio mutantur saecla animantum
et quasi cursores vitai lampada tradunt.
In a short space the generations change,
And, like runners, pass on the torch of life.
Lucretius, On the Nature of Things 2.78-79
Purpose
The purpose of this website is to provide information about Fitch family history in the U.K., up to the Census of 1851. Welcome to the website!
Description
The heart of the website is the file called “Fitch UK Database” in Excel format, containing over 18,000 entries. There are also five supporting files in Word. You can access each of these files by clicking on the relevant button.
The information on this site was compiled by me (Dr John G. Fitch) in the period 2011-19, with the help of the professional genealogist Rita Harris. A revision in 2022 added a further 293 entries to the 18,043 of the 2019 version, and a smaller revision followed in 2024.
Contact
Questions, additions or corrections are welcome, and should be addressed to me at johngfitch51@gmail.com. Those seeking professional help with genealogical research may wish to contact Rita Harris at contactrita71@gmail.com.

John T. Fitch (1926-2020) published several well-researched books about Fitch history, two of them listed in my file "About the Database". Following his death, his website is still maintained and his books are available through it.
